What is RTMP Backup Ingest?

Setting up a backup stream helps you avoid having your broadcast cut off in case your primary stream fails. Castr will automatically switch to the backup stream in case your primary stream is interrupted.

How to use

You can enable the backup RTMP URL inside the stream detail page:

After enabling, you'll see changes in two sections:

  • Primary RTMP (the old URL is now updated)

  • Backup RTMP (a new set of Backup RTMP and Streaming key)

You will need two separate encoders: one encoder linked to the Primary RTMP and the other linked to the Backup RTMP. It is important to match both encoders' output settings to ensure a smooth experience (bitrates, frame rates, resolutions, etc.).

When you stream to the Backup stream, the status will change from Offline to Online. This means it's ready in case the Primary stream fails:

Limitations

Backup RTMP is best for streaming Castr embeddable players and social media destinations. It is best to test your stream before the live time if you want to use Backup RTMP.

The Primary ingests need to be started first to make the failover work; if the primary ingest fails, the stream will fail over to the backup. For smooth switching in your stream, please enable ABR.

The Backup RTMP feature is included with Ultra plan only. (If you have a legacy plan, you can still access this feature if you have Multistream Business, All in One Business, or higher plans)
